Description
Chimarrao, known as mate in Spanish-speaking South America, is a traditional social drink. I remember as a young adult sitting on the front porch with my parents drinking chimarrao; I also remember how proud my dad was of me the first time I asked if I could join the circle of Brazilians he was sharing chimarrao with.
It's a very hot, bitter tea, definitely an acquired taste. My father learned to drink it during his travels as a missionary in Brazil, and he taught the rest of the family. Over the years he collected a few gourds, called cuias, and straws, called bombas. Somewhere along the way, a friend gave him a leather-clad thermos to keep his hot water in, since the cuia has to be refilled after each person drinks. And yes, everyone in the circle drinks from the same cuia, using the same bomba. It's a social thing.
This still-life will be beautiful hanging on the wall in your kitchen or living room!
