When I was five years old, my parents took me to Niagara Falls. They gazed a while at the majestic display before them, then turned to see what I thought of it. I was bent over, fascinated by the rainbow in an oil slick on the ground. My dad immediately took my picture, and they laughed about it with family and friends over the years. "We took her to see Niagara Falls and all she wanted to look at was an oil slick!"

Years later, when I was in in photography school, we were showing slides of a "close-up" assignment. My instructor stared at the screen, puzzled, when my first image came up. "What is this?" It was an oil slick, out in the parking lot -- beautiful rainbow. She was amazed, I was baffled -- had she never noticed oil slicks before?

So yes, all my life I've been fascinated by the beautiful rainbows in oil slicks on the ground. And one that I photographed recently worked really nicely as a kaleidoscope -- I even managed to twist part of it into a butterfly!
