Artist's Description

Unlike the bustling Metropolis where Clark Kent and Lois Lane work at the Daily Planet, Metropolis, Illinois, is a quiet town of some 6,465 people (according to the 2013 estimate U.S. Census Bureau). But they know all about Superman! There’s a 15-foot-tall statue of the superhero in the center of town, and a number of shops in the area cater to the fans who come to visit. Metropolis is located in Massac County, in the southern tip of Illinois.

The town was not named for Superman’s residence – it was named Metropolis back in 1839 by a merchant from Pittsburg and a local landowner, who envisioned it as a transport hub, due to its location on the Ohio River. It was declared the "Hometown of Superman" on June 9, 1972, when the Illinois State Legislature passed Resolution 572, giving it that title. (according to Wikipedia).

The water tower has the name Metropolis over a cartoon image of Superman, who in turn flies over the phrase “The Home of Superman.” Al...
