Description
I made a sort of drippy acrylic piece several years ago, using thinned down acrylic paint to get a runny effect on the canvas. Didn’t really have a finished product in mind – I was just experimenting with the paint. I put the canvas away and didn’t do anything more with it until summer 2022, when I was looking for a backdrop for some little flowers I was making out of the round ends of coin wrappers. This drippy canvas seemed to really suit the purpose, giving me a dark green forest and blue sky on which to highlight my strange little flowers.
By the time I was done, I’d made a couple of butterflies, some clouds reflecting the sunset, and two birds high in the sky, along with my flowers. Long strips of the stripey paper formed bits of grass to ground the flowers, as well as the sunset colors on the clouds.
I made a collage of the words and numbers from the coin wrappers to cover the sides of the canvas, and even managed to pull letters out to spell my name in one spot of the collage. Then I covered the whole thing with a layer of resin.
About the time I was finishing making the piece, the store I work at (and from which I’d gotten all the coin wrappers to begin with) was holding a “Santa’s Workshop” raffle, with art donated by employees and raffled off to employees – and each employee got 20 tickets to spend on trying to get the art piece they wanted. The lady who got mine seemed delighted to have it, and asked me to sign it on the back which I was very pleased to do (I don’t think she’d found my little Easter egg name in the collage.)
