Description
On my computer, I have a folder called Digital Playground. (I have a collection with that same name here on Fine Art America to show off my results.) When I'm searching for inspiration, I look though the images there, and almost always find things that I'd meant to work on but hadn't yet, or that I'd started and hadn't finished, or that I'd put in there because I didn't like it but didn't want to just delete it. This piece falls into that last category.
I made this painting several years ago, and wasn't hugely impressed with my results. I was just getting started with acrylic pouring, and hadn't learned some of the techniques that I know now for getting good compositions. When I photographed it, my lighting wasn't great, so the color was off and the image wasn't as sharply focused as I would have liked. On another day I might have just deleted the image, but for some reason I put it in Digital Playground.
Today I pulled it out and started playing with it. I've learned how to sharpen images, at least a little, and how to remove that color cast to get back to the blues, greens, and white I originally poured. But the composition was still... eh. Wonder what would happen if I did a mirror-and-flip? I enlarged my canvas, duplicated the image and mirrored it, lining up the edges, then duplicated that pair and flipped them over to make an image four times the original size. And suddenly I have converging lines! Arrows pointing toward the center! I really like this! This is the kind of thing that can happen on the Digital Playground. :)
