Description
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. (I Kings 19:11-12, New International Version)
Sometimes we think God is shouting at us, angry. We hear preachers in church getting hoarse with their vehemence, thumping their Bibles on the pulpit. My dad, who was a pastor, told the story of one preacher who wrote in his sermon notes "this point is weak, yell louder here." The Bible tells that God is not in the storm or the earthquake or the fire. He is in the whisper, the quiet voice in our heads and hearts that reminds us of what is right and wrong. You don't have to strain to hear Him -- you just have to listen.
