Description
As my husband lay in the recovery room of the surgical center following successful cataract removal, waking up, beginning to smile and joke with the techs who were watching his vitals, the tension I'd felt all day eased, and I began looking around, noticing the pattern of the curtain running track in the ceiling, the A/C vent, the lights. Earlier in the day I'd tried to make myself relax by looking for things to photograph, but couldn't get my mind off all the possible things that could go wrong with the surgery. But now I was free again, and my phone came out, and I began happily clicking away. My favorite image from that afternoon is this photo of the ceiling in the recovery room with its crisscrossing lines, square air conditioning vent or diffuser, and that track that they use to pull a privacy curtain around individual patients' beds.
Before I posterized the image to make it very high contrast, I rotated it to make it more dynamic, and duplicated the light and part of the track, filling in the upper right corner to balance the lower left. At that point it became the piece titled "Up High." But I always make a larger version of my pieces, making a repeating pattern that works well on all sorts of textiles. In making the larger version this time, I realized I had images that looked like cells dividing, which led to the title of this piece.
